Letter : to General Thomas Jordan, Battery Pringle, James Island, and Confederate passes, 1864 March 26-1865.

Ellis' letter, March 26, 1864, requests permission to cross Confederate lines in order to see her family in Baltimore, Maryland. The letter was endorsed at Fort Pemberton and forwarded to Confederate Headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina, where permission was granted by command of General Beauregard, to leave the Confederacy provided she travel through Richmond, Virginia. An unaddressed envelope from the President's Office, Confederate States of America, and three blank passes, all dated 1865, and printed for ladies, soldiers, and for travel on the Petersburg railroad, are also included.
